Belmont Abbey freshman Emily Archer scored her sixth goal of the
year in the eighth minute and junior midfielder Nicole Voets
added a second half insurance goal as the 17th-ranked Crusaders
moved to 14-1-1 with a 2-0 win over King College this afternoon at
Alumni Field. King falls to 4-11 in the loss.
The Abbey controlled the match from the start as Archer gave the
Crusaders the only goal they would need at the 7:42 mark, as she
ran down a long pass from Kristin Foster, dribbled five yards and
fired a shot from 10 yards out that beat Abbey Kitts for the goal.
Archer's six goals are tied for the most on the team with Connie
Axiotis.
That was all of the scoring until the 49th minute when Voets
found the back of the net for the first time. After a King foul
just outside the penalty area, Voets lined up a free kick from 20
yards out, sending a low screamer through the King wall and into
the right corner of the net to up the lead to 2-0.
The defense kept King off the scoreboard with solid play, and
goalkeeper Anna Donaldson preserved a shutout in the 83rd
minute with a diving save on a shot from nine yards out.
Belmont Abbey outshot the Tornados 18-6 and held a 10-2 edge in
corner kicks. Donaldson collected four saves, while Kitts stopped
nine shots.
