Box score
The Belmont Abbey volleyball team lost at Pfeiffer by a 3-1
score (19-25, 25-20, 20-25, 23-25) on Tuesday night inside the
Merner Gym. The Lady Falcons improve to 7-12 overall, 7-5 in league
play, winners of four-straight. The loss sends the Crusaders to
16-7, 9-4.
Both teams came out strong early in set one going back and forth
until a Kim Amerell ace put the Lady Falcons up for good in the
opening contest. Moments later, Abbie Ovbey would pick up one of
her five kills in the set to push the advantage to three before
three Crusader errors help spark a four-point run. Belmont Abbey
got back in the set briefly on a five-point stretch thanks to three
Lady Falcon errors and a kill Lydia Schellenberg, but Ovbey would
later put the hosts up 1-0 in the match with two more kills over
the final seven plays.
The Crusaders quickly evened the match at one apiece in set two
grabbing an early lead and never looking back. Angela Jubb put
Belmont Abbey up 14-9 with one of her 11 kills on the night before
Jordan O'Bryant tried to bring the Lady Falcons back with a kill at
16-13. Jubb and Schellenberg would each register a pair of late
kills in the set as the Crusaders dealt the final blow on Bria
James fourth kill of the night.
Belmont Abbey looked to be on their way to a 2-1 match lead as
Schellenberg put the visitors up four at 13-9, capping off a
four-point streak. Another throw down by Jubb put the Crusaders up
18-13 which is where the Pfeiffer comeback began. After a kill by
setter Colleen Wands, Kristina Mordini would hold serve over the
next eight plays forcing a pair of timeouts and turning around a
five-point deficit into a four-point advantage. A couple of aces
and kills by O'Bryant sparked the run which was finished off by
three-straight kills courtesy of Amerell.
Down 15-10 in the fourth set, Mordini again would help start a
comeback with the final of her three aces on the night, a combo
block by Anna Vizvary and O'Bryant as O'Bryant later tossed down
another kill bringing the Lady Falcons to within one. After a
visitor's timeout, a Pfeiffer miscue and kill from Victoria Jensen
put the Crusaders back up a pair. With Amerell serving, two more
Belmont Abbey errors and service ace swung the two-point lead back
to the hosts forcing the final Crusader timeout. Moments later,
back-to-back kills from Jubb and Kay Schellenberg cost Pfeiffer a
timeout down by one. However, five Pfeiffer kills over the final
seven plays completed the comeback in a 25-23 set win clinching the
match.
O'Bryant led all competitors with a match-high 17 kills on the
night for Pfeiffer, one of four Lady Falcons in double-digit kills.
Amerell followed closely with 11 while Mordini and Ovbey each had
10. Lydia Schellenberg led the Crusaders with 13 kills while Jubb
concluded with 11.
