The Belmont Abbey women soccer team, ranked 16th nationally and
number one in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region, got two
late second half goals to push by Erskine, 2-0, at Huggins Field on
Saturday afternoon. Belmont Abbey improved to 13-0-1 and 8-0 in
Conference Carolinas play while Erskine dropped to 4-9 on the
season and 2-3 in Conference Carolinas.
The match was scoreless until the 74:53 mark when junior forward
Connie Axiotis found herself free at the top of the penalty area on
the right side. Axiotis lifted a beautiful left-footer into the top
left corner of the goal for her team-leading sixth goal of the
year. The Crusaders padded the lead to 2-0 at 80:35 when Axiotis
assisted Kiera Woerner for her second goal of the year.
Belmont Abbey dominated the statistics on the afternoon getting
off 21 shots on the afternoon to Erskine's three. The Abbey has
now outscored its opponents 36-4, including 29-3 in Conference
Carolinas matches. The shutout is the Abbey's 12th clean sheet in
14 matches.
