The 16th-ranked Belmont Abbey women's soccer team gained a 0-0
draw against the visiting Lenoir-Rhyne Bears this afternoon at
Alumni Field. The Abbey, ranked third in the Southeast Region, is
now 12-0-1, while Lenoir-Rhyne moves to 9-1-1. It is the Abbey's
tenth shutout in 13 matches.
Lenoir-Rhyne outshot the Abbey 13-5 and held a 7-2 advantage in
corner kicks. The first half, in which L-R outshot the Abbey 5-1,
saw the Bears have most of the scoring opportunities, but could not
capitalize.
In the second half, the Abbey had the best scoring chance,
coming in the 56th minute when Ananda Gebreyesus was all alone in
the box and fired a low shot that was smothered by Bears goalkeeper
Caitlin Scruggs.
After 90 minutes, the two teams moved to overtime. In the first
ten minutes, L-R had two shots to the Crusaders one, but the one
for the Abbey nearly ended the match, as Emily Archer dribbled down
the right flank and fired a shot towards the far post, where
Scruggs blocked it and let if bounce off her hands, leaving an
empty net, but two L-R players cleared it away just a touch before
Connie Axiotis could put a foot on it.
Scruggs made three saves, while Abbey goalkeeper Anna Donaldson
made six.
