The Belmont Abbey softball team closed out the 2009 regular
season by dropping both games at Pfeifer, losing game one 8-1 and
losing game two 2-1 in eight innings. The Falcons improve to 12-6
in the conference and 25-15 overall. The Abbey drops to 3-17 in
league play and 9-33 overall.
In game one, Pfeiffer and the Abbey each tallied a run in the
opening inning to get game one started. Pfeiffer followed with
four runs in the second and three more in the fifth while holding
the Abbey scoreless for the remained of the game. Despite the
scoring difference, Pfeiffer only slightly edged out the Abbey in
hits, 9-8. However, the Crusaders tallied four errors in the
game.
Megan McNeill led Pfeiffer at the plate going 2-2 with one RBI
and two runs scored. Shelby Fleming was 3-4 with three RBI. Ranzy
York gave a strong performance with two hits on four at bats. She
also tallied one RBI and one run scored.
Allison Braswell earned her 10th win of the season by pitching a
full game giving up eight hits and one earned run. She marked four
strike outs and walked one.
The Abbey was led by Katie Hobbs who had the team's only run
scored. She was 1-4 at the plate. Tara Ruebel was credited with
the RBI.
Kayla Short suffered the loss after pitching only 1.2 innings.
She gave up three hits and five runs (zero earned) while strike out
three and walking five.
Game two saw only seven total hits with the Abbey marking four.
Strong pitching for both teams kept the score at zero on each side
until the sixth inning when the Abbey scored off an error in
Pfeiffer's outfield. In the bottom of the seventh, Pfeiffer
managed one run to force extra innings. The Falcons scored the
winning run in the bottom of the eighth off an error by the
Crusader pitcher.
Brittany Waldon led the Falcon offense with one hit on two at
bats and tallied one RBI. Kylee Nichols had Pfeiffer's
game-winning RBI.
Falcon Amanda Beck earned her third win of the season after
pitching eight innings. She gave up only four hits and one
unearned run on 30 batters faced. She had two strike outs and
walked two as well.
Dani Beres led the Crusaders with their lone RBI. She was 1-4
at the plate. Gina Antonucci had the only run of the game for the
Abbey. She was 1-3 in game two.
Danielle Puckett suffered the loss after pitching seven innings.
She gave up just three hits and two runs (one earned) with four
strike outs and four batters walked.
