The Belmont Abbey softball team was swept at Queens University
Monday evening at Park Road Park in a Conference Carolinas contest.
Queens won the first game 8-0 in six innings, and won 4-3 in eight
innings in game two. Queens improves to 16-19 overall and 7-3 in
Conference Carolinas, while the Abbey falls to 7-29 overall and
3-13 in Conference Carolinas.
In the opener, the Royals jumped ahead in the first on a two run
homer and would tack on five more runs in the second, and another
in the sixth provided the winning margin. Kayla Short took the loss
for the Abbey. She gave up nine hits in five and
one-thirds innings. Chantel Dodge earned the win for the Royals,
improving to 10-13 on the season.
Tara Ruebel was 2-3 in the game and Alysia Stewart was 1-3.
In game two, Belmont Abbey jumped out to a two run lead in the
top half of the fifth with a two-run homer. Danielle Devlin doubled
with two outs gone and the bases were cleared by Katie Hobbs.
Queens tied the game at two-all in the bottom of the fifth on
a two-run homer.
In the bottom of the eighth with two outs down, Kari Kmetic had
a sacrifice bunt to start the inning and advance Amanda Bowman to
third. Brittany Stephens followed with an RBI double to tie the
game at three. Dodge followed with the game winning RBI.
Stephens pitched through the seventh inning and registered six
strikeouts. She gave up seven hits. Puckett threw every pitch for
the Abbey, giving up seven hits and striking out five.
