The Belmont Abbey softball team was swept in a Conference
Carolinas doubleheader at Limestone College this afternoon,
dropping game one 5-3 and falling 7-2 in the nightcap. Limestone
improves to 14-23 overall and 5-3 in Conference Carolinas, while
the Abbey falls to 7-25 overall and 2-10 in Conference
Carolinas.
Game one saw Limestone score the first five runs of the contest,
plating two in the first and three more in the fourth before the
Abbey rallied with one run in the fifth on a solo home run by
Carrie Markham, and two more in the sixth. Katie Hobbs led off with
a walk and moved to third on a single. After a pitching change,
Beres moved to second and Hobbs scored on a passed ball to move the
Abbey to within three runs at 5-2. Beres moved to third on a single
by Tara Ruebel, and later scored when Ruebel was cut down at second
on a stolen base attempt. Limestone went down in order in the
bottom of the sixth and the Abbey did the same in the top of the
seventh to end the game.
Emily Wallace earned the win after allowing three runs, two
earned, on four hits in five innings. Lauren Robertson earned the
save after holding the Abbey to one hit over two scoreless innings,
fanning two. Kayla Short took the loss. She gave up five runs,
three earned, on seven hits in three and two-thirds innings. Beres
led the Abbey with two of its five hits.
In the nightcap, the Lady Saints jumped ahead 1-0 with a run in
the second, but the Abbey responded with two runs in the fourth to
grab a 2-1 lead. After a single and a groundout double play, Ruebel
ripped a double and moved to third on a passed ball, and scored on
another passed ball to knot the game at one. Markham, who had
reached on an error and moved to second on a passed ball, came
around to score on an error of the bat of catcher Alysia Stewart to
give the Abbey a 2-1 lead.
Belmont Abbey held the Lady Saints scoreless in the bottom half
of the inning, but one frame later Limestone scored six runs on
four hits to reclaim a 7-2 lead, which would be the final.
Kristy Witten earned the win, holding the Abbey to a pair of
unearned runs on four hits in five and one-thirds innings, striking
out three. Markham took the loss after yielding six runs on seven
hits in four innings, striking out two.
