Belmont Abbey forward Shayla Jackson scored 24 points and
Courtney Naquin added 22 as the Lady Crusaders women's basketball
team closed out the 2008-09 regular season with a 79-70 win at
Limestone this evening. The Abbey improves to 18-9 overall and 16-6
in Conference Carolinas, while Limestone falls to 13-14 overall and
11-11 in Conference Carolinas. The win clinches the third seed for
the Abbey, which earns a first round bye in the upcoming Conference
Carolinas Tournament and will host a quarterfinal game Tuesday
night at 7:00 p.m.
Jackson poured in 24 points on 10-14 shooting from the field,
with seven rebounds, four steals, two assists and two blocked shots
in 34 minutes. Naquin added 22 points on seven of 16 shooting from
the field, with a game-high eight assists, a blocked shot and a
steal in all 40 minutes. Kelsey Daniel posted 11 points on three of
three shooting from the field and a five for seven effort from the
free throw line. She added two steals and an assist.
Belmont Abbey shot 53.8 percent (28-52) from the floor,
including a 59.3 percent (16-27) output in the first half as it
built a 42-40 halftime lead. The Lady Crusaders outscored the Lady
Saints 37-30 in the second half.
Limestone shot 37.1 percent (23-62) as Tierny Burnett led all
scorers with 25 points, while Bianca Gonzalez contributed a double
double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Lauren Pace added 14
points.
