The Belmont Abbey softball team was swept in a doubleheader by
the visiting Lander University Bearcats. The Abbey dropped the
opener 6-2 and fell in the nightcap 5-4. Lander is now 8-6, while
the Lady Crusaders are now 2-8.
In the opener, the Abbey scored the first two runs of the game
on an RBI double by Katie Hobbs, who then scored on the next at bat
when Dani Beres singled her home for a 2-0 lead.
Lander would respond with a run in the fourth on a single by
Pamela Stephenson, and two more in the fifth on RBI singles by
Carrie Hudson and Nikki Brown. The Lady Bearcats would close the
scoring with three runs in the fifth as they would take the opener,
6-2.
Bailey Lee earned the win, tossing a complete game, eight-hit,
two run, four strikeout effort. Kayla Short took the loss after
giving up three runs on eight hits, striking out five and walking
four.
In game two, the Abbey again jumped ahead 2-0 with single runs
in the first and third, getting an RBI double by Beres in the first
and the same from Tara Ruebel in the third. The Bearcats would tie
the game at two with a pair of runs in the fourth and would take a
3-2 lead with a run in the fifth, but the Abbey would tie the game
at three in the bottom half as Michelle Primm led off with a walk,
moved to third on a double by Beres and scored on a wild pitch.
The Abbey would regain the lead in the sixth, as Danielle
Puckett carved an opposite field double to left center, moved to
third on a groundout by Katie Childers, and would score on the same
play when the throw to nab her at third sailed into the
outfield.
Down to its final three outs, Short recorded two outs before the
Bearcats would push two across, as Haley Foster ripped an RBI
double that plated pinch runner McKenzie Watts to knot the game at
four. Lindsey Sammons followed with a double down the leftfield
line that brought home Foster for the winning run. The Abbey
threatened in the ninth, but Short lined into a double play to end
the game.
Aerin Phillips earned the win after allowing two runs, one
earned, on three hits in four innings of relief. Short took the
loss after giving up two runs on three hits in the seventh
inning.
