The Belmont Abbey softball team was swept in a doubleheader at
Wingate this afternoon, falling 10-0 and 11-1, both in five
innings. Wingate improves to 6-0 on the year. Belmont Abbey falls
to 2-6.
In the opener, Wingate plated three runs in the first inning and
six more runs in the second inning. The Bulldogs added one more run
in the third on an RBI double from junior third baseman Debra
Grijalv to make it 10-0.
Brittany Blankenship picked up her third win of the year. She
allowed only one hit in three innings of work while striking out
three. Allison Smith pitched the final two innings, also allowing
just one hit. Kayla Short took the loss for the Crusaders. She gave
up nine earned runs on nine hits in 2.2 innings of work.
In the nightcap, shortstop Michelle Primm led the Belmont Abbey
offense, going two-for-two with a double and an RBI. Wingate put up
three runs in the first inning.
Belmont Abbey scored in the top of the third when senior pitcher
Carrie Markham scored on an RBI double from Primm. Wingate answered
with six runs to close the scoring at 11-1.
Cristin Kelly earned the win for the Bulldogs. She pitched all
five innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out
four. Danielle Puckett took the loss for the Crusaders. She allowed
nine earned runs on eight hits in 2.1 innings.
