The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team outscored Chowan 10-4
in overtime after the two teams were deadlocked at 55 at the end of
regulation as the Crusaders moved to 2-1 on the year with a 65-59
victory this afternoon at the Wheeler Center. Chowan falls to 1-3
with the loss.
With the Abbey leading 55-53 with 46 seconds remaining in
regulation, Chowan's Brittany Nicholson stole the inbound pass and
layed in the easy bucket to knot the game at 55. After another
Abbey turnover on the ensuing inbounds play, a Chowan three-point
attempt fell off the rim and the rebound was a jump ball in the
Abbey's favor. Amanda McDonald had the final shot attempt with two
seconds left, but it was blocked away by Nicholson to send the game
into overtime.
The Crusaders dominated the extra five minutes, scoring the
first six points in the stanza and holding Chowan without a field
goal until 13 seconds remained, limiting the Hawks to a pair of
free throw attempts.
Belmont Abbey shot 32 percent from the floor as junior forward
Shayla Jackson led all scorers with 21 points and nine rebounds,
while Asha Hardaway posted another double double, her second in
three games, with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Jackson also tied for
the game-high with three steals as the Abbey forced 27 Chowan
turnovers.
Chowan had four players reach double figures with three-Naomi
Walters, Najah Harris and Ransheda Jennings-each leading the way
with 12. Nicholson posted ten as the Hawks shot 34 percent from the
field. Nicholson's nine rebounds were the team high as Chowan won
the rebounding battle 46-42.
