Belmont Abbey sophomore forward Connie Axiotis scored twice and
Nicole Voets and Rebecca Mateo scored goals as the Crusaders
women's soccer team improved to 7-3 overall and 6-1 in Conference
Carolinas with a 4-2 win at Lees-McRae this evening. The Bobcats
fall to 6-5 overall and 4-2 in Conference Carolinas.
The Abbey outshot Lees-McRae 14-11 as five of the match's six
goals came in the second half. Voets put the Abbey ahead 1-0 in the
33rd minute with a strike from 20 yards out.
That was all of the scoring until the 74th minute when
Mateo started a stretch where five goals were scored in a 14 minute
period with a 20 yard shot off of a throw in from Kristin Foster to
up the Abbey advantage to 2-0.
Less than two minutes later, Lees-McRae cut the lead in half
with a goal by Jessica O'Leary, but Axiotis stretched the lead back
to a pair just six minutes later, beating goalkeeper Brittany
Bolton with a shot to the far post. The two goal lead was short
lived, as the Bobcats pulled to within one just 44 seconds later as
Maribeth Novak connected on a free kick, but Axiotis struck seven
minutes later for her sixth goal in two matches, scoring on a loose
ball to extend the lead back to two at 4-2, which was the
final.
