The Belmont Abbey women's soccer team dropped a tough 1-0 overtime decision to the visiting Carson-Newman Eagles this afternoon at Alumni Field. Carson-Newman, ranked 11th in the nation and second in the southeast region, moves to 14-2-1, while the Abbey falls to 11-4.

Both teams had plenty of scoring chances throughout the match, but both defenses held the offenses from finding the back of the net for the entire 90 minute regulation period.

Carson-Newman outshot the Abbey 11-4 and held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks, and scored the golden goal in the 97th minute as Morgan Gruenenfelder collected a pass at the top of the box and fired in a shot into the lower left corner of the net for the game winner.

Both goalkeepers, Kelsey Lovell and Lauren McKenzie, made four saves, and Lindsay Palm earned a team save when she swatted away an Eagles scoring chance late in regulation to preserve the tie.
