Belmont Abbey sophomores Rebecca Mateo and Nicole Voets both
scored off off free kicks as the Crusaders women's soccer team
clinched the Conference Carolinas regular season title with a 2-0
win over the visiting Limestone Saints this afternoon at Alumni
Field. The Abbey, which will play all of its tournament games at
home as long as it remains alive, improves to 11-3 overall and 9-1
in Conference Carolinas, while the Saints fall to 6-9 overall and
5-4 in Conference Carolinas.
After a scoreless first half in which the Abbey outshot
Limestone 6-3, the Crusaders scored the only goal they would need
at the 53:29 mark. After a Limestone hand ball infraction, Voets
sailed a free kick to the middle of the box, where Mateo beat her
mark and connected on a running header for the 1-0 lead.
9:58 later, Voets would be on the other end of of the same
scoring play from Mateo's goal, as she headed home a free kick off
the foot of Carly Kensinger to up the lead to 2-0. which would be
the final.
Belmont Abbey outshot Limestone 12-6 and held a 13-1 advantage
in corner kicks, including a convincing 10-0 edge in the first
half. Saints goalkeeper Brittany Clark made five saves, while
Kelsey Lovell made one.
