Box score
The Belmont Abbey men's soccer team scored a pair of goals in
each of the first two halves as it recorded an easy 4-1 win over
the visiting Wingate Bulldogs this afternoon at a wet and cold
Alumi Field.
Belmont Abbey scored the game's first three goals, the first
coming on a James Lawrence Forbes tally off of an assist by Ross
Smith just 8:15 into the match. Freshman Zach Wertis made it 2-0 31
minutes later off of a feed from Emmanual Yamson.
That was all of the scoring until the 75th minute when Sunny
Makh recorded his first collegiate goal. Adrian Mendoza gathered
the ball down the left side of the penalty area and sailed a pass
to the right of the goal mouth, where Makh was stationed, and fired
a volley past Joey Calandra for the goal.
Wingate got on the board at exactly 79:00, as Piero Riva
collected a pass at the top of the box, dribbled to his right and
connected on a 20-yard strike into the upper right corner for the
goal.
Wingate outshot the Abbey 13-11, and held an 8-1 advantage in
corner kicks.
