Women's Basketball Holds On At Anderson, 59-58

The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team had three players reach double figures as the Lady Crusaders held off a late-charging Anderson rally as they held on for an exciting 59-58 win this evening at Abney Gym. Belmont Abbey, winners of three-straight and six of its last seven, improves to 11-5 overall and 9-2 in Conference Carolinas, while Anderson falls to 8-9 overall and 8-5 in Conference Carolinas. The win gives the Abbey a season sweep of the two-game series.

Belmont Abbey shot 45 percent (19-42) as sophomore forward Shayla Jackson led the Lady Crusaders with 14 points on six of ten shooting from the field. She sank both of her free throw attempts and led all players with eight rebounds. Junior guard Courtney Naquin added 11 points, two assists and a steal, while Ashley Giddens posted ten points, three assists and a steal.

The Abbey led 31-15 at the half on the strength of a 50 percent shooting effort, while holding Anderson to a 4-23 output (17.3 percent). In the second half, the Lady Trojans shot 48.4 percent (16-33) as it cut a lead that peaked as high as 16 down to one with 16 seconds left. Belmont Abbey shot 40.8 percent (9-22) in the second half.

Anderson was led by Keana Boyd's 22 points, while Alexa Neal added 14 and Kirsten Peterson posted ten.
