Belmont Abbey senior midfielder Christian Ocampo scored the golden goal in the 116th minute to give the Crusaders a 2-1 double overtime win at Clayton State this evening. The goal capped off two unanswered by the Abbey as it rallied from a 1-0 deficit. The Crusaders improve to 2-1, while the Lakers remain winless at 0-3.

Clayton State jumped ahead 1-0 in the sixth minute on a Roger Beniface tally, and the score stayed there until the 26th minute when freshman Jack Reid sent a free kick from 35 yards out to senior defender Kyle Fenner, who buried home the equalizer at the 25:06 mark.

Neither team scored again through the end of regulation and the first ten minutes of extra time before Ocampo ended it at the 115:35 mark. Sophomore Michael Scharville sailed a free kick towards the front of the goal, where Ocampo outjumped everyone and headed home the winning goal, his first of the year, and his second golden goal in nearly one calendar year, as his goal in overtime defeated Georgia Southwestern on September 8, 2007.

Abbey goalkeeper Bryan Alenky made three saves in the net for the Abbey.

The Crusaders are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 when it takes on North Georgia.
