The Belmont Abbey men's soccer team fell 2-0 at St. Andrews
Presbyterian in a Conference Carolinas matchup this afternoon. SAPC
maintains a 3-5-1 overall and 1-3-0 league records after posting
their first win in five games. The Crusaders, who hold a 5-5-0
overall and 1-2-0 conference ledgers, continue to alternate wins
and losses through their first 10 games of the season.
The Abbey held a 20-9 shot advantage in the league showdown but
Knight's goalkeeper Nick Stevens stopped all seven Crusaders shots
on goal.
After a scoreless first half, Justin Garton put the Knights on
the scoreboard with a goal in the 66th minute. Junior Andrew
Johnson made a long pass from midfield that created a breakaway for
Garton, who then scored the eventual game-winning tally with a low
shot that squeaked inside the near post. Paulo Brunetto Neto scored
the second goal two minutes later.
The Abbey had several chances in the second half including an
11-4 shot advantage in the final 45 minutes. The freshman duo of
Max Pembleton and Adam Gray -- who are both from Nottingham, United
Kingdom - each had four shots for the visitors. Pembleton almost
cut the deficit in half in the 86th minute but his shot went off
the crossbar.
