Box score
The Belmont Abbey soccer team scored single goals in each half
as the Crusaders posted a 2-0 shutout over visiting Catawba College
this afternoon at Alumni Field. The match was delayed 30 minutes
due to a severe storm, and it was played in a steady rain. The
Abbey improves to 3-2, while the Indians slip to 1-4.
The Crusaders outshot the Indians 19-9 as they scored the only
goal they would need in the 19th minute. Senior Paul Goding
dribbled down the right side, beat a defender and sailed a crossing
pass to the center of the box, where sophomore Michael Scharville
volleyed home his first goal of the year.
That was all of the scoring until the 64th minute when Logan
Rhea scored his second goal of the year, off of a pass from Adam
Gray. Gray fired a shot that was saved by Catawba goalkeeper Tyler
Held, but his carom went right to Rhea, who fired a shot into the
empty net for the goal.
Belmont Abbey held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks, and
goalkeeper Bryan Alenky made four saves in the net.
