Belmont Abbey junior forward Celene Molera scored both Crusader
goals, with both assists coming from Nicole Voets, as the Abbey
women's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to 14 with a 2-1
win over Clayton State this afternoon. The Crusaders pick up their
first win of the season as they improve to 1-0-1.
Molera and Voets connected for the first goal just 11:19 into
the match, as Voets fed Molera on the right side of the penalty box
and she fired home her first goal of the year for a 1-0 Abbey
lead.
8:18 later, the two connected again as Voets passed off to
Molera in front of the goal, where she buried home her second of
the match to give the Abbey a 2-0 lead. The Lakers cut the lead to
2-1 with a goal in the 58th minute, but the Crusader defense held
off Clayton State to preserve the win.
The Abbey outshot the Lakers 14-3 and held an 11-1 advantage in
corner kicks. Anna Donaldson did not make a save in the net.
Clayton State's goal stopped the Abbey's shutout streak at 13,
as it was the first Abbey goal allowed since September 22, 2007,
when the Crusaders defeated Limestone 4-1. Since that match and
including today's outcome, the Crusaders have outscored their
opponents 29-2.
