The Belmont Abbey men's basketball team fell to the 14th-ranked
Catawba Indians 94-76 this afternoon in the final game of the 2008
Moretz Sports Classic, hosted by Lenoir-Rhyne. Catawba improves to
9-3, while the Abbey falls to 5-3.
Belmont Abbey trailed 51-30 at the half but outscored the
Indians 46-43 in the second stanza as senior guard Jonathan Jackson
led three Crusaders in double figures with 18 points. He also had
two assists and three steals. Senior guard Deonte Murphy and senior
forward Kashif Gumbs both finished with 11 points. Murphy posted a
pair of assists and two steals, while Gumbs, in his first action of
the season, was nearly perfect from the floor, converting 3-5 field
goal attempts and converting 5-6 free throw attempts. The Abbey
shot 37.5 percent (27-72) from the field.
Catawba, which shot 51.5 percent (35-68) was led by Donzell
Williams's 20 points. He was one of four Indians to reach double
figures.
