Box score
Belmont Abbey freshman defender Nicole Voets scored the golden
goal in the 97th minute to give the Crusaders women's soccer team a
1-0 overtime win over visiting Mount Olive this afternoon. The win
extends the Abbey's unbeaten streak against non-conference
opponents to 35, its home winning streak to 14 and its shutout
streak to four as it improves to 12-2-3 overall and 8-0-1 in
Conference Carolinas, while the Trojans fall to 6-11-0 overall and
4-5-0 in Conference Carolinas.
The Crusaders dominated the entire match, outshooting Mount
Olive 15-2 and holding a commanding 18-0 edge in corner kicks as
they had all of the scoring opportunities in the match, hitting the
crossbar three times before Voets found the back of the net at the
96:51 mark. Freshman Rebecca Mateo beat a Trojan defender in the
right corner, beat one defender and sent a cross to the top of the
box where Voets gathered the pass and curled home a left footed
blast into the top left corner of the net for the golden goal.
Today was the seventh consecutive MOC-BAC women's soccer match
decided by one goal, and the third of last seven matches decided in
overtime. The Abbey has never lost to Mount Olive in its
history.
