The Belmont Abbey men's basketball team outscored the defending
National Champion Barton Bulldogs 14-10 in overtime after the two
teams were tied at 77 at the end of regulation as the Crusaders
men's basketball team earned its second-straight win with a 91-87
overtime win this evening at the Wheeler Center. The Abbey improves
to 6-6 overall and 5-1 in Conference Carolinas, while the Bulldogs
fall to 9-4 and suffer their first conference loss as it drops to
5-1.
The Crusaders shot 45.9 percent (33-74) from the floor as
Jonathan Jackson led five Crusaders in double figures with 24
points on 10-22 shooting from the floor. He sank three of his five
free throw attempts, including two with 11 seconds left in overtime
to seal the win. Senior forward Ric Marczenko and sophomore forward
Chad Patus both finished with 16 points, with Marczenko tying the
game-high with 14 rebounds. Junior guard Deonte Murphy added 13
points as he sank seven of his 10 free throw attempts, including
three in the overtime period. Freshman guard Richard Barbee added
12 points on three of eight shooting from the field.
Barton was led by Brian Leggett's 29 points and 14 rebounds,
while Bobby Buffaloe and L.J. Dunn both added 11. Aaron Suggs
finished with 10 as the Bulldogs shot 45.2 percent (33-73) from the
floor, but were undone by 24 turnovers to just 15 for the
Crusaders.
The Abbey is back in action Saturday afternoon at 4:00 when it
hosts Coker.
