SPARTANBURG, SC - Belmont Abbey scored five first half goals and
added three more in the second half as the Crusaders extended its
unbeaten streak to six and its winning streak to four as it posted
it second-straight shutout with an 8-0 win over Converse College
this evening. The Abbey improves to 9-3-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the
CVAC, while the All Stars fall to 2-10 overall and 1-8 in the
CVAC.
The Abbey, which outshot Converse 24-1, scored five first half
goals as junior forward Erin Kolb recorded a pair to raise her
season total to nine. Junior midfielder Stephanie Leotii scored
another for her sixth of the year, and defender Jill Barnes scored
her first of the year.
With less than ten seconds remaining in the half, sophomore
forward Lakesha Bell scored her third goal of the year to give the
Abbey a 5-0 lead at the half.
The Crusaders picked right back up where it left off in the
second half, as freshman forward Erin Thibodeau stretched the lead
to 6-0 with her fourth tally of the year. After freshman Laurie
Jordan was taken down in the Converse penalty box, goalkeeper
Laisha Lentz was called on to take the penalty kick, which she
buried for her first career goal. Freshman defender Kristin Voirin
ended the scoring with her second goal of the year as the Crusaders
improved its road record to 6-2-1.
The Abbey is back in action Saturday when it hosts Anderson at
12:00 p.m. at Alumni Field.
