BELMONT, NC - The Belmont Abbey men's soccer team scored three
unanswered goals after allowing a Lees-McRae goal in the 24th
minute as the Crusaders extended its winning streak to four with a
3-1 win this afternoon. The Abbey improves to 12-4-2 overall and
finishes its CVAC season with a 7-1-2 mark, while the Bobcats fall
to 7-6-3 overall and 2-5-2 in the CVAC.
After Diego Cordiero assisted Berin Beracic for the first goal
of the match at the 23:36 mark, the Crusaders tied the match
exactly 13 minutes later as junior forward Luis Arrieta buried his
CVAC leading 17th goal of the year, a shot from the top of the
box.
The score remained tied at one at the half until senior
midfielder Nick Wyatt gave the Abbey the lead for good at the 50:08
mark. Arrieta got behind the Bobcat defense and was pulled down
from behind in the box and was awarded a penalty kick, which Wyatt
buried for his third goal of the year. All three of Wyatt's tallies
this year have been penalty kicks.
Arrieta added the finishing touches on the scoring with exactly
20 minutes left, as he got free down the left side, sidestepped one
defender and ripped a shot past goalkeeper Sean Paradise for his
18th goal of the year.
The Abbey outshot the Bobcats 12-6 as Arrieta finished with six.
Lees-McRae was carded six times, including two red cards.
The Crusaders are back in action Monday when it closes out the
regular season with a home match against North Greenville. Kickoff
is set for 3:00 p.m.
