SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Ella Wiklander put together a strong opening round to set the pace on the opening day of the Conference Carolinas Women's Golf Championship Sunday at The Carolina Country Club.
Wiklander was the only golfer under par, shooting a 1-under 71 to lead by one shot over Erskine's Lina Lindqvist and North Greenville's Kate Matthews after the first 18 holes. She made five birdies on the round to help Belmont Abbey finish in second place after the first 18 holes.
Katie Cullen also got her tournament off to a good start after shooting an opening round of 2-over par 74 that included a run of 14 straight holes.
Lilianna Carcel also was in the 70s with her opening round of 77 while
Bethany Welch and
Kate Nyers rounded out the team with rounds of 84 and 86.
Belmont Abbey shot an-opening round total of 306 as team, trailing by 10 shots over Erskine.
