ROME, Ga. -- Belmont Abbey outhit Shorter in both games of Saturday's Conference Carolinas softball doubleheader, but came up a run short in both contests. The Crusaders dropped the first game 2-1 in eight innings and the second 1-0.
Casey Laing and
Alayna Patrick each totaled three hits on the day.
With the results, The Abbey moves to 7-13 overall and 1-3 in league play, while Shorter is now 9-16, 3-3.
THE OPENER
- Laing had a 3-for-4 contest with her solo home run in the fourth giving the Cruaders a 1-0 lead.
- Patrick, Megan Towery, Hannah Jane Fard, Lily Garnett-Brown and Nora Cutler added to the eight-hit total. The Hawks had just only six hits.
- However, The Abbey left the bases loaded in the sixth, allowing Shorter to tie the game on an RBI double and win the game in the eighth on an RBI triple.
- Sienna Garcia (4-6) took the hard-luck loss, pitching the complete game. She struck out five and walked three over seven-plus innings.
THE NIGHTCAP
- Shorter scored the only run, unearned, of the game on an infield single in the third. The Hawks mustered just five hits in the contest.
- Belmont Abbey totaled six hits, two by Patrick and one each by Gard, Towery, Kennedy Teasley and Ella Crowe.
- Torey Cagno (2-5) took the loss in the complete-game effort.
UP NEXT
- Belmont Abbey returns home Wednesday at face Southern Wesleyan.
- First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Crusader Field.
