Abbey Softball Splits Doubleheader with King on Senior Day

BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey softball team celebrated four seniors by earning a split of a doubleheader against King Saturday afternoon at Crusader Field.

The Crusaders took the opener 6-5 before dropping the nightcap 4-2.

Lily Garnett-Brown, Ivy Holley, Trinity Wall and Jordyn Stefani were all honored in a pregame ceremony as part of Senior Day.

With Saturday's results, Belmont Abbey is now 12-16 overall and 4-6 in Conference Carolinas play. King is 19-15 overall and 6-4 in the league.

THE OPENER
  • Hannah Jane Gard went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a solo home run.
  • Alayna Patrick and Megan Towery had two hits apiece.
  • Belmont Abbey fell behind 4-0 in the top of the first but tied the game with a run in the first, two in the second and another in the third.
  • Towery put the Crusaders up 5-4 in the fourth with an RBI single, but the Tornado rallied in the sixth to make the score 5-5.
  • Casey Laing provided the game-winner in the bottom of the frame, singling to center to bring home Patrick, who started the inning with an infield single.
  • Sienna Garcia, the third pitcher of the day, came on in relief in the sixth and retired six of the seven batters she faces. She allowed just one hit to improve to 7-8.

THE NIGHTCAP
  • King jumped out to an early lead with a solo home run in the first inning and a two-run home run in the third.
  • The first hit for the Crusaders came in the third inning fourth inning with Gard's leadoff single.
  • Towery put the Abbey on the board with a two-out, two-run home run to get the Crusaders back within a run at 3-2.
  • The Tornado added a solo home run in the seventh inning to cap the scoring.
  • Garcia took the loss after throwing 6-plus innings and allowing four runs on six hits and striking out three batters.
  • Erin Gill came in relief and retired the Tornado in order in the seventh inning.
  • The Crusaders finished with just two hits in the second game.

UP NEXT
  • Belmont Abbey heads on the road to face Northwest Division leader North Greenville on Wednesday for a doubleheader.
  • First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. from Tigerville, S.C.
