AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Megan Towery registered a pair of hits in both games of a softball doubleheader Wednesday, but Augusta came out with two victories over Belmont Abbey. The Jaguars won the first game 2-1 before capturing the second 7-3. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Feb. 4, but postponed by weather.
With the results, the Crusaders fall to 2-6 on the season, while Augusta improves to 4-6.
THE OPENER
- Towery and Jordan Stefani each had two hits with Alayna Patrick and Hannah Jane Gard getting the other two.
- Belmont Abbey took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI groundout by Ava Elkins but Augusta tied the game on a homer in the bottom of the frame. The game-winning run came on an RBI double in the sixth.
- Sienna Garcia (1-3) took the hard luck loss, allowing just two runs and six hits in a complete-game effort. She walked only one batter while striking out five.Â
THE NIGHTCAP
- A trio of Crusaders recorded two hits -- Towery, Casey Laing and Nora Cutler.
- Laing's infield single to short drove home Cutler in the third, cutting the score to 3-1.Â
- Towery and Laing had RBI singles in the seventh as the Crusaders tried to mount a late rally.
- Lily Hartsell (0-2) took the loss, allowing five hits over 5.2 innings pitched, She walked more and struck out one.
