SUMTER, S.C. — The Belmont Abbey men's tennis team is back on top of Conference Carolinas once again.
For the fourth straight year, the Crusaders have earned the conference tournament title thanks to a 4-3 win over No. 2 seed Converse Sunday afternoon at the Palmetto Tennis Center.
The win improves Belmont Abbey to 22-16 overall and the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. It is the first time in program history that the tennis program has won four tournament titles in a row dating back to 1996.
The Crusaders rallied from being down in the doubles point and taking four of the six matches in singles play.
Charlie Fremaux and Isaac Buerkele did earn a win in doubles, 6-3, over Stanley Waters and Takuma Furumaki.
In singles play,
Ricard Novell earned a convincing, 6-0, 6-3 win over Manuel Roncero at the No. 1 spot while
Jackson Korta and
Marcus Bergelin earned wins at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
Korta won 6-3, 7-6 (3) over Lucas Walker in his match while Bergelin won 7-5, 6-1 in his match.
Peru Bayo had the championship clinching point for the Crusaders as he earned a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 win over Stanley Waters and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
Korta and Bergelin also took home all-tournament honors.
