BELMONT, N.C. --
McKenna Meadors hit a walk-off grand slam in game one of a doubleheader Friday, leading Belmont Abbey to a softball split with Concord. The Crusaders won the opener 5-1, while the Mountain Lions rebounded for a 4-3 win in the nightcap. The games were originally scheduled as part of a three-team, round-robin at Concord, but moved to Crusader Field due to expected weather in West Virginia.
With the split, The Abbey stands at 6-2, while Concord improves to 2-5.
THE OPENER
- Meadors went 3-for-4 with a run scored and four runs batted in. Her shot to right-center with the bases loaded broke a 1-1 tie.
- Maddie Phillips also had three hits in three at-bats.
- The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead in the first on an attempted double steal.
- Concord tied the score in the sixth before Meadors' heroics.
- Lilly Hartsell earned the complete-game win to improve to 2-0. She scattered five hits, while balancing five strikeouts against one walk.
THE NIGHTCAP
- Meadors added two more hits and an RBI to her day, while Lily Garnett-Brown and Sami Kirk also had two hits.
- Belmont Abbey out-hit Concord 11-7.
- Concord jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first two innings, before The Abbey closed the gap to a run on a two-run double by Sami Kirk in the fourth.
- The Crusaders tried to rally from a 4-2 deficit in the seventh, scoring a run, but left the tying run at first on a pair of popouts.
- Kayla MIlan (1-2) took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) in 4.2 innings pitched. She walked two and struck out two.
