Softball Splits Doubleheader with Mars Hill

BELMONT, N.C. -- 

The split leaves the Crusaders with an 8-5 record, while the Lions stand at 9-9.

THE OPENER
  • Hallie Mele and Bailey Presley each had two hits as the Crusaders tallied 10 in the contest.
  • Three hits went for extra bases -- doubles by Mele, Presley and Adison Yoder.
  • The Crusaders jumped out to a 4-0 lead with two runs in both the third and fifth innings. Presley stole home for a 1-0 lead before Mackenzie Allison plated Trinity Wall with a single down the right field line. Sydney Pon's two-run single doubled the lead in the fifth.
  • Two MHU runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh before The Crusaders won on a walk-off error.
  • McKenna Meadors, who came on in relief with no outs in the top of the seventh, earned her first collegiate decision to move to 1-0.
THE NIGHTCAP
  • Mele and Foster Sharpe recorded multiple hits as part of another 10-hit attack.
  • The Crusaders again jumped out to a 4-0 lead, scoring one in the first on a bases-loaded walk to Sharpe. In the third, she drove in another runs wiht a single to left before Marlie Stillwell doubled the lead with a two-run double.
  • Mars Hill responsided with three in the fourth and four in the fifth before an insurance home run in the seventh.
  • Erin Gill (3-2) took the loss, allowing six runs (three earned) in 4.1 innings of work.
UP NEXT
  • Belmont Abbey has the weekend off before opening Conference Carolinas play on Monday.
  • The Crusaders welcome Southern Wesleyan to campus for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
