Crusaders Defeat Converse, Clinch No. 2 Seed In Conference Tournament

BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey women's lacrosse team kept up its strong offensive form as the team surpassed 20 goals for the third straight game in a 24-3 win over Converse in a Conference Carolinas matchup Tuesday evening at Alumni Field.  

The victory was the third in a row for the Crusaders, who officially clinched the second seed in the Conference Carolinas Tournament next weekend at Barton in Wilson, North Carolina
Riley D'Andrea led the way for The Abbey with an eight-point effort (5 goals, 3 assists) while Carlino had four goals and an assists. Additionally, Grace Ridge and Kacey Kubarewicz both recorded their first career hat tricks in the victory.

Belmont Abbey is now 10-6 overall, 7-1 in the league while Converse drops to 8-8 overall and 4-4 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Crusaders jumped out to a 10-0 lead after the opening quarter that included a stretch of three goals in the final 1:19.
  • After Convers scored three goals in the second quarter, Belmont Abbey went back up double digits with goals from Kate Roberts and Sophia Browning late in the half.
  • Belmont Abbey surpassed double-digit assists for the third time this season with 11 on the night. D'Andrea and Reilly McCarthy led with three and two assists, respectively with six others recording an assist as well.
  • Emma Pherson scored twice late in the contest as part of the dozen Crusaders who scored goals during the evening.
  • Summer Eddinger earned the win making five saves in goal and also had three ground balls.
  • Elizabeth Hommel led Belmont Abbey with four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
  • Belmont Abbey out-shot Converse 38-8 and held Converse scoreless in the second half.
SPECIAL HONOR
Gwen Boston was honored during halftime of the game Tuesday with a ceremony. Boston is a current high school senior battling Stage 4 cancer and will be attending Belmont Abbey and be a part of the women's lacrosse team next season.

  • The Crusaders close out the regular season with a game against Emmanuel at 5 p.m. Friday at Alumni Field.
  • Nine seniors will be recognized in a pregame ceremony as part of Senior Day.
