BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Belmont Abbey softball team wrapped up its weekend road trip with a fifth straight doubleheader split Saturday, this one coming against the King Tornado.
The Crusaders fell 9-1 in the opening game before bouncing back with a 9-8 victory in the second game to earn a split.
Sydney Pon led the way with four runs batted in during the second game while
Mackenzie Allison homered for the fourth time in the last six games. The two combined for five of the seven hits in the second game.
Belmont Abbey is now 10-16 overall, 5-5 in Conference Carolinas. King is 18-13 overall, 6-2 in the league.
GAME 1
- The Crusaders were held to just two hits in the opener both of which came in the sixth inning.
- Jordyn Stefani had a two-out double and later scored on an RBI single from Hallie Mele.
- The Tornado jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and scored the final two runs in the sixth inning to end the game.
- Adeline Cox took the loss in the circle for The Abbey.
GAME 2
- Belmont Abbey got off to a better start in Game 2 with Mele and Presley drawing walks to lead the game off before Pon homered to give the Crusaders a 3-0 lead.
- After the Tornado added two runs in the first, the Crusaders made it a two-run game in the third inning with Allison's solo home run.
- King tied the game at 4-4 with two runs in the third.
- The back-and-forth battle continued as the Crusaders added three in the fourth: one on an RBI single by Pon and two more on a single by Allison.
- Ashley Marchitelli got her first hit of the season for The Abbey with a single in the fourth.
- The Tornado got two back in the bottom of the frame and later tied the game in the sixth.
- The Crusaders came away with two runs thanks to a Tornado throwing error with Mele at the plate to score two runs.
- King led off the seventh with a home run but Adison Yoder was able to keep the Tornado off the scoreboard the rest of the way to hold on and earn the complete-game win.
UP NEXT
- The Crusaders head back on the road for a Conference Carolinas doubleheader at Francis Marion beginning at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Florence, S.C.
- After Wednesday, Belmont Abbey will play 14 of the final 16 games of the regular season at home.
