Daniel Wins in Durham, Takes Third in Chapel Hill

DURHAM, N.C. -- Charles Daniel posted a pair of top-three finishes in the Triangle Area this weekend, winning Sunday's race in Durham after a third-place standing the day before in Chapel Hill. Jesse Kooistra, Trey Hedgecock and Nat Worcester also earned top 10 places during the weekend.

At the Chapel Hill Grand Prix on Saturday, Daniel got into a break near the midpoint of the race and stayed away for the remaining. The finish included a 1km climb that he battled through to finish third. Worcester was instrumental in keeping the pack together early in the race, allowing Kooistra to make a break for eighth place at the end.

In Sunday's Bull City Grand Prix, Daniel took a different approach, protecting his teammates from the front of the pack. He marked every move from riders at Virginia Tech, Duke, Liberty, Maryland, and Appalachian State with a break never developing. With 20 minutes to go, Daniel found himself up front and made a break that he held to victory. Hedgecock followed late and was able to bring Worcester with him, allowing the duo to take second and fourth. Kooistra was just behind in seventh.

"This was yet another opportunity for our team to build both on and off the bike," Head Coach Derek Dalzell said. "We are really focusing on 100% teamwork all the time and having our "all hands on deck" mentality.  This weekend showed that everyone was willing to do their job for the overall well-being of the team. We have a few weekends before nationals left where we will be really pushing to see what is possible for us.  So far, I couldn't be any prouder of this group and the efforts they are putting in."

Belmont Abbey has a few weeks off before the Atlantic Coast Cycling Conference Championship in Boone on April 14-15.
