Belmont Abbey junior outside hitter Hannah Schellenberg hit .406 as she led all players with 17 kills as the Crusaders women's volleyball team extended its winning streak to three with a 3-0 victory over the visiting Emmanuel Lions this evening. Set scores were 25-17, 25-18 and 25-13. The win improves the Crusaders ledger to 5-11 overall and 4-3 in Conference Carolinas, while Emmanuel drops to 8-7 overall and 2-3 in the league.
After a relatively easy first set win, the Abbey and Emmanuel traded the lead for most of the second set before the Abbey broke a 17-17 tie by winning the next two points to seize control of the frame and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set was all Belmont Abbey, as the Crusaders surged ahead 11-4 and never looked back. The Lions could only get as close as seven points at 15-8, but Belmont Abbey won seven of the following eight points to power ahead 22-9. Schellenberg's 17th and final kill of the evening sealed the 3-0 win.
Belmont Abbey hit .265 for the match as Schellenberg led all players with 17 kills on 32 attacks with just four errors. She was the only player to reach double figures on the night. Caitlin Hankins hit .357 as she slammed down six kills on 14 attacks with one error. Gabby Martinez handed out 17 assists with Deidre Rodriguez adding eight. Martinez added three service aces and ten digs. Julie Newell totaled six assists with a match-high 14 digs.
The Crusaders are back in action Saturday night at 6:00 when they welcome Erskine to the Wheeler Center.
