BELMONT, N.C. - Morgan Patton scored the lone goal of the day for The Abbey women's soccer team. The Crusaders, however, dropped a very competitive 2-1 contest to visiting Limestone. Belmont Abbey is now 9-5-1 in 2017, and 5-3-1 in Conference Carolinas play. Limestone is now 13-2-0 overall and 10-0-0 in the conference.
From the start, Belmont Abbey came out with a strong offense. A header in the third minute by Alex Butorovich had the Limestone goalkeeper diving. The Crusaders kept the ball on their side of the field for most of the early minutes, and Limestone did not take a shot until the 20th minute. Another Abbey opportunity came in the 22nd minute, when Chandler Arrowood took a corner kick. At the 34:02 mark, Patton put The Abbey in front 1-0 off a pass from Madison Knutsen. Just three minutes later, Limestone tied the match at one, and that would be the score at halftime.
Belmont Abbey continued to keep the pressure on in the second. Limestone did score in the 54th minute. Later in the period, The Abbey took four shots and three corner kicks in a three-minute span. The defensive unit also limited Limestone's scoring chances throughout the half. In the end, the Saints took the contest 2-1.
Belmont Abbey will next welcome the Emmanuel Lions on Tuesday, October 24 for a 1 p.m. contest.
