BELMONT, N.C. - Morgan Patton scored all three Crusader goal this afternoon, as Belmont Abbey earned a 3-1 win against the King Tornado. The Abbey now stands at 7-2-1 on the year, and 3-1-1 in conference play. King (TN) is now 1-8-1 on the season, with a 1-5 Conference Carolinas record.
The Belmont Abbey offense got into high gear quickly, taking three shots in the opening seven minutes, one of which hit the post. In the 17th minute, senior Nicole Ferren had a corner kick opportunity, which she sent to Patton, who tallied the first score of the afternoon. Later, in the 39th minute, sophomore Mary Doyle set up Patton for her second goal of the day, which she placed into the left corner of the goal. The Abbey led 2-0 at halftime.
The second half started much like the first, as a header by Patton sailed inches left of the goal. Patton scored in the 61st minute, off a pass from Allyson Elliott. The Tornado went on to score a goal at the 77:17 mark, but it was the only goal The Abbey defensive unit would allow, as the team finished off the match with a 3-1 victory.
On the day, Patton's three goals were her season-high. She also took five shots. Elliott and Virginia Dellinger each took four. The Abbey defensive unit, led by freshman Madison Knutsen, only gave up seven King shots on goal.
Up next for the Crusaders will be a visit to Lees-McRae College on Saturday, October 7. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
