Morgan Patton, Mary Doyle Lead Crusaders to 2-0 Victory Over Trojans

MT. OLIVE, N.C. - Sophomore Morgan Patton scored early in the match, and The Abbey never looked back.  The team cruised to a 2-0 win at Mt. Olive to improve to 6-2 in 2017, including a 2-1 conference mark.  The Trojans now stand at 1-6 overall and 1-2 in Conference Carolinas play.

Belmont Abbey came out strong from the start.  The Crusaders took two shots in the first seven minutes of the game.  In the 11th minute, sophomore Morgan Patton put The Abbey on the board with a goal off a penalty kick.  Back-to-back corner kicks kept the pressure on.  The Crusader defense was strong too, giving up just two shots in the period, none on goal.  Belmont Abbey led 1-0 at halftime.

In the opening four minutes of the second half, the Crusaders took two corner kicks and three shots.  They continued to keep the ball in their side of the field, keeping pressure on the Trojan defenders.  In the 72nd minute, Mary Doyle got a 30-yard shot past the Mt. Olive keeper to increase the Crusader lead to 2-0 late in the contest.  After that, the stubborn Abbey defense finished off the game, not surrendering a Trojan shot until the final minutes.  Belmont Abbey won the contest 2-0.

On the night, the Crusaders outshot the Trojans 31-7.  The Abbey took 10 corner kicks to Mt. Olive's one.

Up next for Belmont Abbey will be a match against Barton on Saturday, September 30.  Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. as The Abbey will celebrate its Homecoming.
