BELMONT, N.C. - Belmont Abbey Women's Soccer Head Coach Mike Lynch became the program's all-time winningest coach this afternoon. The 2-1 victory over UNC Pembroke gave Coach Lynch his 87th win at The Abbey. He is in his seventh season with the Crusaders. With the victory, Belmont Abbey moves to 4-1, while the Braves are now 2-2.
Right from the start, the Crusaders' offense was in high gear, earning two corner kicks in the opening six minutes. The teams went back and forth for a while, until sophomore Allyson Elliott scored two goals in a span of 1:03 span in the 44th and 45th minutes. Both goals were assisted by sophomore Morgan Patton. The assists were Patton's third and fourth of the season. Belmont Abbey took the 2-0 advantage into halftime.
In the second, the Crusaders again had a strong offensive attack, with a shot and a corner opportunity in the first 12 minutes of the period. The defense also was strong, preventing the Braves from getting any shots on goal during that span. In the 86th minute, UNC Pembroke scored its only goal of the contest. The game ended in a 2-1 Belmont Abbey win.
On the day, the solid Abbey defense limited the Braves to four shots on goal.
The Crusaders will next visit Southern Wesleyan on Saturday, September 16. The match will kick off at 5 p.m.
