SECAUCUS, N.J. – Matt McGarry was selected by the New York Yankees in the 2018 Major League Baseball draft Wednesday. The second baseman was chosen in the 34th round with the 1,027th overall pick. The San Diego native earned third-team all-region honors from National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association as he led Belmont Abbey with 23 stolen bases. McGarry hit .349 with 64 runs scored while driving in 25 runs with 75 hits.
The Crusaders finished the 2018 season 40-14 advancing to the NCAA Southeast Regional Final. After finishing third in Conference Carolinas, The Abbey earned a bid to the southeast region as the three seed.
