BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team swept the doubleheader that opened Conference Carolinas play against the Emmanuel Lions Friday night. The Crusaders won game one by the score 8-6 and took game two 15-2. Belmont Abbey collected 24 hits between the two games as they improve to 9-2 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. Emmanuel moves to 5-3 on the year with a 0-2 conference record.
Robert Lathrop lead the Crusader effort as he collected five hits on the day, including three doubles and four RBI. Colin Rosenbaum and Matt McGarry both tallied four hits within the two games as well as four runs scored apiece. AJ Hendricks crushed his first home run of his career as a part of a two-hit, four-RBI, effort and JuJuan Cason recorded his first collegiate hit.
Game one was won by Cameron Busby as he went 7.1 innings allowing just four earned runs on 10 hits and two walks while striking out two. Brady Hill earned his second save of the season with his relief appearance in the ninth. Jeff Thompson won game two for the Crusaders, going five innings allowing one run on two hits and six walks with nine strikeouts. The Abbey held Emmanuel to just three hits in game two.
The series will continue with game three tomorrow at Abbey Yard, the first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.
