BELMONT, NC - Thomas Yoder led a 13 hit attack as the Belmont Abbey Crusaders defeated the Armstrong State Pirates 10-7 on Friday at Abbey Yard.
Tyler Byrnes would get the start in the opener, seeking his seventh win of the year. In 7.2 innings, the Charlotte senior would weather an eighth inning rally to pick up the win. After a Heath King hold to close the eighth, Kyle Halbohn struck out the side in the ninth to earn save number ten.
Offensively, the Abbey(37-13-1) scored single runs in the first two frames to create needed distance for Byrnes.
The Crusaders would plate five runs in the third, as seven straight batters reached to gain a 7-0 lead.
After a two run rally for Armstrong, Yoder would highlight a three run fourth, stroking a homer to left for a 10-2 Abbey advantage. The hit was his third of the game, as the Cary native was a triple shy of the cycle.
Five players would earn multi hit games for the Abbey along with Yoder, including Rosenbaum, Clarke, Lorenzo Wright and Kwalwasser.
Tomorrow, the two teams will wrap up the regular season with a seven inning game, followed by a nine inning finale. Airtime on BASN will begin at 11:45 on www.basn.wgnc.net.
From there, the Crusaders will play the waiting game, as they look for an at-large berth in the regional tournament. The NCAA DII Baseball Selection Show will air May 15 at 10pm. Follow www.abbeyathletics.com to find out more about your Crusaders baseball team.
