Crusaders Make it 14 Straight
BELMONT, NC - The Belmont Abbey baseball team  defeated the Pfeiffer Falcons on Friday by a 10-3 score. The win extends their streak to 14 games, and continues a perfect conference mark at 10-0.  The Crusaders are 18-3-1 on the year, as Pfeiffer falls to 7-15, 2-5 in conference play.
Tyler Byrnes started for the Abbey, as the senior from Charlotte entered the contest a winner in four straight decisions.  He was opposed by Duncan Everett, seeking his second win of the year.
Byrnes got some help in the early going, as the Crusaders infield turned two double plays in consecutive innings that allow Byrnes to settle in.  That theme resonated throughout the evening, as the Crusaders were sterling defensively.
In the bottom of the first, Nick Nunziato lifted a fly ball to left field that towered over the scoreboard to give the Abbey  a 1-0 lead.
Pfeiffer would answer back in the fourth as Zach Scudder and Chaston Gordon collected RBI hits to give the Falcons their only lead of the night.
A Kayden Krause single in the bottom of the fourth would score Weston Clarke, tying things at two.
In the fifth, the Abbey would get some separation, scoring three times to take a 5-2 lead. Clarke would get the big knock, doubling home a pair to give the Abbey a lead they would not relinquish.
Pfeiffer's run in the sixth came on a Gordon single, scoring Scudder to take the lead back to 5-3.
In the bottom of the inning, the Abbey tacked on a pair of runs, as Matt McGarry and Colin Rosenbaum would get run scoring singles to extend the lead to 7-3.
The Crusaders would finish off the Falcons with a three run seventh, as Lorenzo Wright and Kevin Elefante would strike with extra base hits to plate Krause and Wright.
From there, Ross Garrett would pitch the final two frames to seal the win for Byrnes. The win moves Byrnes record to 5-1 on the season.
The Abbey wrapped 12 hits, as four Abbey hitters paced the attack.
The Crusaders are back at Abbey Yard tomorrow, for a 1pm Doubleheader, as Blake Waldren and Harry Ferguson will climb the hill in the twinbill for an Abbey club seeking it's fourth straight series win in Conference Carolinas.  Airtime on BASN is set for 12:45.
