Schmitz Leads Women's Cross Country At Royals Challenge

The Belmont Abbey Women's Cross Country team raced to a 19th-place finish out of 37 teams and an 11th-place finish out of 24 Division II teams in today's 5K at McAlpine Creek Park in Charlotte.

The Crusaders started off well with senior Lucy Schmitz and freshman Elizabeth Labun running side-by-side throughout the first mile which they completed in 6:18.  Schmitz, racing for the first time this season, finished her third mile in 19:07 and completed the race in 19:59.  Labun was just three spots and less than a second behind Schmitz.

Next for the Crusaders was freshman Amber Arias, who ran a respectable 20:27.

Freshman Julia Otranto (21:01), senior Brianna Mosby (21:25),senior Kaitlin Howard (23:07), and freshman Shannon Corbett (23:51) rounded out the field.

The Abbey will next run when it hosts the Conference Carolinas Championship at Frank Liske Park on October 23.
