BELMONT, N.C. -- Lexi Henriott tallied 15 kills and hit .257 and Cassidy Bonito posted her 11th double-double of the season, lifting Belmont Abbey to a 3-1 (25-10, 21-25, 25-16, 25-13) Conference Carolinas victory over Converse in women's volleyball action Friday night. Bonito finished with 40 assists and 12 digs, with Mackenzie Chrapliwy reaching double figures in kills with 10.
The Crusaders (14-11, 8-5) hit only .174 in the contest, but held the Valkyries to a hitting percentage of -.017, the third lowest of the year by an opponent. The Abbey also registered nine aces.
Belmont Abbey stormed out of the gate with four straight points, then answered a Converse point with a 5-0 run. The lead reached 16-4 after back-to-back aces by Chrapliwy. The Crusaders continued to shine, hitting .409 in the set, for a 25-10 victory. Neither team could get anything going in the second with both registering more errors than kills. The Abbey was up 8-2 early, but Converse scored six in a row to tie the set at 8. The score was later tied at 21, when the Valkyries ran off four in a row for a 25-21 victory. BAC had 12 errors versus 15 kills in the stanza.
The Crusaders regained their form in the third, although they trailed 5-4 in the beginning. But three straight points broke a 7-7 tie, then a 7-2 run turned a 14-11 into 21-13. The set finished 25-16.
The Abbey trailed 8-7 in the fourth, but tallied five in a row, then cruised to victory. It ended the set with 18 of the last 23 points, including seven straight points on Sarah Kenney's serve.
The regular season concludes tomorrow with a 12 noon game against rival Limestone. Senior players -- Henriott, Coreen Norwood, Emily Rose -- and senior student coach Sabrina Raudales-Arriaga will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
