Women's Volleyball Welcome Eight Newcomers for 2017 Season

BELMONT, N.C. -- The Belmont Abbey women's volleyball program will feature eight new players on the 2017 roster, head coach Toni Elyea announced today.

The newcomers include a pair of transfers in Keifer Zimmerman (Madison College) and Andie Meredith (Newberry). Sydney Logan, Megan Gartland, Natalie Hunt, Brianna Morgheim and Maddy Donnelly join the program as freshmen.

"Every year we are striving to bring in not only the best athletes we can, but great young ladies who will fit our family style of gritty athletes and who love to work hard and compete at a very high level," Elyea said. "We feel that we have once again achieved that goal. Our incoming class will bring a high level of play to the Wheeler Center on a daily basis and we are looking forward to seeing how their talents compliment a very strong group of returners."

Mary Liebert, Outside Attacker, 5-11, Fr., Plano, Texas (Frisco Liberty)
Plays for Dallas Arsenal 18 Gold Club, which won first place at Nationals in 2017 and finished third at the National Tournament in Puerto Rico last summer... during her junior year, she was team Most Valuable Player and first-team all-district for TAPPS at Legacy Christian Academy.

Sydney Logan, Setter, 5-10, Fr., Nolensville, Tenn. (Ravenwood)
Led Ravenwood to the Class AAA state tournament as a senior... paced the Lady Raptors in aces, while finishing the season with 622 assists... during her career, she was All-Mid State first team (2016), all-region (2014), all-district (2014 and 2016) and all-tournament (2014 and 2016)... plays for Alliance Volleyball Club.

 

 

 

Keifer Zimmerman, Outside Attacker, 5-10, Jr., Green Bay, Wisc. (N.E.W. Lutheran HS /Madison College)
Comes to The Abbey after a very successful high school and collegiate career at Madison and Rock Valley College... was a three-year varsity and all-conference (2015) player for the Blazers... was named all-region as a senior... was a second-team All-N4C player at Madison College in 2016... while at Rock Valley, she played in 38 matches, helping the Golden Eagles to a 30-8 record overall and a 10-2 mark in the N4C... was second on the team with 402 kills and a 3.24 kills per set average.

Megan Gartland, Middle Blocker, 5-9,  Fr., Denver, Colo. (Bishop Machebeuf)
A two-sport three-year varsity athlete in both volleyball and basketball for Bishop Machebeuf... was named team Most Valuable Player as the starting middle blocker... helped her team to the regional tournament... helped her Lady Buffaloes to the district playoffs which lead to being selected to the All-State 3A game and second-team all-state distinction for her Metro League.

 

 

Natalie Hunt, Middle Blocker, 6-0, Fr., Somonauk, Ill, (Somonauk)
Had a record-setting senior year where she established a school record for career kills with 681 and single-season bests this past fall with 244 kills, 375 digs, 191 aces, and 142 block kills... helped lead SHS to a record-tying 26 wins and a Little Ten Conference Tournament Championship in 2016, the first at the school since 1993 and the first for veteran volleyball coach Angie Koontz... plays for Sports Performance out of Chicago.

Andie Meredith, Opposite Hitter, 6-3, So., Dublin, Ohio (Dublin Scioto/Newberry)
Coming to The Abbey after a very successful high school career and collegiate debut... as a freshman at Newberry, she recorded 174 kills, averaging 2.10 kills per set, logged 31 digs and 23 total blocks... recorded double-digit kills in 10 matches... was a two-year starter at Dublin Scioto, leading her team in kills and posting 3.0 kills per set in 2015... earned first-team all-conference and second-team all-district honors in Central Ohio... was third in the conference in total kills, kills per set and hitting percentage... played for the Elite Volleyball Club.

 

 

 

Brianna Morgheim, Outside Attacker, 5-11, Fr., Spring Hill, Tenn. (Paige)
Enjoyed an outstanding senior year as she tallied 409 kills, 168 digs and 98 aces... The all-state, all-district and all-tournament MVP also lead her team in hitting percentage at .269... was named to the TSWA all-state team.... plays for Alliance Volleyball Club.

Maddy Donnelly, Libero, 5-7, Fr., Jacksonville, Fla. (Creekside)
Comes to Crusaders with a lot of high caliber experience from not only Creekside High School but by being coached at one of the best clubs in Florida.... at Jacksonville Juniors, she helped lead her team to four national qualifiers for USA Volleyball... was also named as Prep Volleyball's Defensive Danie in 2014.... is a part of the National Science Honors Society, Advanced Scholars Program, Leadership Academy, St. Vincent's de Paul, and is a volunteer for the Baptist Medical Center.
