Schmitz Captures Conference Titles In 5000 Meters & 1 Mile As Women's Track & Field Finishes 5th At Indoor Championships

Belmont Abbey junior Lucy Schmitz won Conference Carolinas titles in the 5000 meter run and the 1 mile run and added a second place finish in the 3000 meter run to lead the Crusaders women's Track & Field team to a fifth place finish at the Conference Carolinas indoor championships this afternoon and JDL Fasttrack in Winston-Salem.

Schmitz is now a six time all-conference selection as she won the 5000 meter run by two seconds and the one mile run by four seconds. She repeats as runner up in the 3000, as she was four seconds off the pace. She scored 28 of the Crusaders 51 points.

Other scorers were Saralee Martelly's fifth place effort in the triple jump and the 60 hurdles while adding a sixth place effort in the high jump. The distance medley relay team of Theresa Suarez, Bri Crisci, Kaitlin Howard and Brianna Mosby placed fourth. Liz Thierfelder finished fourth in the 400 meter run.
