Crusaders Open Season with OT Thriller

BELMONT, N.C. - The Belmont Abbey women's soccer team opened its season with a 2-1 overtime victory over St. Anselm this afternoon.  It is the second year in a row the Crusaders went into overtime to start the season. 

How it Happened

  • The Hawks struck first with a goal in the ninth minute
  • With 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Katherine Turner took a shot from almost midfield that sailed over the St. Anselm goalie's head, tying the match at one
  • Allyson Elliott scored the game-winner in overtime off Alex Butorovich's corner kick
  • Both teams gave up a total of nine shots on the day, reflecting the excellent defense by both teams.  Rachel Coutinho was the defensive leader for The Abbey
  • Sophomore Caroline Lauer was credited with the win for the Crusaders
