MURFREESBORO, N.C. - The Belmont Abbey women's soccer team wrapped up the 2017 regular season with a 3-0 win at Chowan this afternoon. The Crusaders finish the year 11-5-1 overall and 7-3-1 in conference play. The Hawks finish 11-2-2, with a 5-1-1 record in conference play.
Chowan took four shots in the first five minutes of the game, but the Crusaders withstood the attack, taking two shots and a corner kick in the next minute and a half. In the nineteenth minute, Nicole Ferren took a corner kick to keep The Abbey on the attack. Then in the 37th minute, she put the Crusaders in front 1-0 off a pass from Morgan Patton. Belmont Abbey took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
Belmont Abbey's offense came out strong in the second half, as Chandler Arrowood took a corner kick in the opening minute of the period. The Crusaders also took the next couple of shots, keeping the ball on its end of the field. Later in the half, Aaron Schrempp scored two goals in a 1:11 span. This gave the Crusaders a 3-0 lead. Kat Laughlin took a corner kick at the 80:21 mark. The Crusaders took two more shots at the end of the game, and The Abbey closed out the contest with the 3-0 win.
On the day, Belmont Abbey outshot Chowan 20-8. Cassie Manion took five shots, while Schrempp took four, scoring twice. The Crusaders only gave up three Chowan shots on goal.
Belmont Abbey will host the no. 6 seed in Round One of the Conference Carolinas Tournament on Monday, October 30 at 2 p.m. The opponent will be determined by the results of Saturday's contests.
